To keep my research organized I organize by category and projects:

📁 Presentations and Conferences
📁 Peer Review

📁 Projects
📁 Personal

Project Subfolders
📁 Manuscript
📁 Data
📁 Literature

BEHAVIOR I HAD TO UNLEARN AS A PHD STUDENT.

As am ambitious kid, I always aimed high for my grades and achievements. But when it came to talking about them publicly, I always felt like I needed to downplay it because I didn’t want to sound like I was bragging.

Now I’m almost 30 and during my job interview process, I still found it so hard to talk about my success, even though that’s the point of an interview! It was so uncomfortable, and I had to keep reminding myself that I have permission to talk about my success. And that what I’m feeling is the result of years of socialization where I was overtly told that I should be “humble” and not “brag.” There’s nothing wrong with self-promotion. Especially in the workplace, and on the job hunt, where sometimes your best advocate is yourself.

I ALMOST LOST ALL MY DATA (STORYTIME) I bought a

I ALMOST LOST ALL MY DATA (STORYTIME)

I bought a new hard drive to keep my work separate from my other files for my post-doc position. The drive worked fine for a few months until one day I connected it to my computer, but the file explorer showed nothing on the device. And panic ensued. I didn't have half of my work backed up anywhere else.

I tried all the tricks to get it to work, and after an hour of trying, it finally showed my files.

Throughout my Ph.D., I was pretty good about following the 3-2-1 rule. This moment reminded me that I needed to have other backups. You can't rely on only one storage format!

The last 6 months have been a major transition since PhD life. I defended in July 2023. Which also happened to be the same month I got a job offer, found a new place to live, and moved out of my old apartment. So while preparing for my defense I was also preparing to start the next chapter of my life.

Would not recommend doing it all in one month 😅

But somehow I did. And I am so grateful I finished what I started. Late 2019 and early 2020 were pretty awful for me. My advisor decided to up and leave the university and I was met with anger and hostility when I chose not to follow along. This, in combination with the beginning of a global pandemic, made me also quit academia.

I didn’t though. Despite being told I wouldn’t be successful by staying behind, I finished the thing and finished it well. I got a co-advised post-doc position at one of the best children’s hospitals and universities in the US. Moral of the story: prove the people who doubt you wrong and be proud of it 💕
