Things Women in STEM Should Stop Doing

    June 15, 2021 She Sciences

As I’ve done more research on sexism in the workplace, I learned that language and behavior have some of the largest influence how others perceive your abilities, confidence, and authority. In STEM, these personalities qualities are what people look to in jobs and leadership positions. Unfortunately, most of the things in these slides are socialized behaviors that women learn throughout childhood and young adulthood. Such as:😳 Being apologetic😳 Holding back sharing accomplishments😳 Being taught to be “likable and accommodating” It’s…

5 ACCOUNTS YOU SHOULD HAVE AS A PHD Have you ever 5 ACCOUNTS YOU SHOULD HAVE AS A PHD

Have you ever tried looking up a researcher, but you can’t seem to find anything online about them or their research record? Annoying right? 🙄

Students and young career academics need to create an online research presence so other people can find out more about you and your awesome research!

✨ Google Scholar is a must! Simply create an account with your Google account and add your publications.

✨ You need OCRID ID for publishing! Think of this as your ID number for your publication record. This number will be tagged to all your publications

✨ ResearchGate - Online research community and profile for tracking and sharing research. Great resource for uploading and downloading literature PDFs.

✨ If you made it this far without a LinkedIn, you need to make one ASAP!! If someone is looking to connect with you professionally, they're going to search for your LinkedIn first!

✨ Publons - This tracks your peer review service! Since academics don't get paid for peer review (boo), we might as well claim social credit online right?!

HOW I ORGANIZE MY RESEARCH PROJECT FILES To keep HOW I ORGANIZE MY RESEARCH PROJECT FILES

To keep my research organized I organize by category and projects:

Main folders:
📁 Group Meetings
📁 Presentations and Conferences
📁 Peer Review
📁 Coursework
📁 Projects
📁 Personal

Project Subfolders
📁 Manuscript
📁 Data
📁 Literature

Setting up my files in this way allows me to think about things in terms of entire projects! What is your strategy for organizing your research files?

BEHAVIOR I HAD TO UNLEARN AS A PHD STUDENT. As a BEHAVIOR I HAD TO UNLEARN AS A PHD STUDENT.

As am ambitious kid, I always aimed high for my grades and achievements. But when it came to talking about them publicly, I always felt like I needed to downplay it because I didn’t want to sound like I was bragging.

Now I’m almost 30 and during my job interview process, I still found it so hard to talk about my success, even though that’s the point of an interview! It was so uncomfortable, and I had to keep reminding myself that I have permission to talk about my success. And that what I’m feeling is the result of years of socialization where I was overtly told that I should be “humble” and not “brag.” There’s nothing wrong with self-promotion. Especially in the workplace, and on the job hunt, where sometimes your best advocate is yourself.

Have you ever felt this way?

I ALMOST LOST ALL MY DATA (STORYTIME) I bought a I ALMOST LOST ALL MY DATA (STORYTIME)

I bought a new hard drive to keep my work separate from my other files for my post-doc position. The drive worked fine for a few months until one day I connected it to my computer, but the file explorer showed nothing on the device. And panic ensued. I didn't have half of my work backed up anywhere else.

I tried all the tricks to get it to work, and after an hour of trying, it finally showed my files.

Throughout my Ph.D., I was pretty good about following the 3-2-1 rule. This moment reminded me that I needed to have other backups. You can't rely on only one storage format!

How do you store and organize your data?
